I guess I’ll “call a spade a spade”

Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1913):

To be outspoken; to call things by their proper names without any “beating about the bush”.

It looks like gravediggers don’t use spades, but instead proper shovels.  I would guess this is to make the hole perfectly rectangular.  More on spades and shovels to come…

Riding up the winding road of Saint Agnes Cemetery in the back of the rattling old truck, Francis Phelan became aware that the dead, even more than the living, settled down in neighborhoods. The truck was suddenly surrounded by fields of monuments and cenotaphs of kindred design and striking size, all guarding the privileged dead.
